How do you improve the environmental performance of a laboratory building? You look at all the usual suspects – the site, water, materials, the indoor environmental quality, and energy. Opportunities abound. In labs, though, the first target should be energy. From the HVAC systems required to condition the air to the electricity needed to power all the scientific equipment, labs are notorious energy hogs. A typical lab consumes two to five times as much energy as a comparably-sized office building — and this consumption is rising.
