Interface hosted the retreat for 18 HOK representatives at Shelburne Farms in Vermont.
"The workshop provided us with an opportunity to tell our story about sustainability and our efforts to mimic or incorporate the designs and patterns we see in nature with the designs of our new products. In nature, designs are essential, effective and are interconnected in the ecosystem so that there is no unnecessary waste. Nature is designed to be both beautiful and functional. Likewise, our new designs by David Oakey and the research under way in R&D center on how we can maximize efficiency, utility and beauty in the design of our products.
"What we have learned so far from biomimicry can hold applications for us throughout our business, from sales and marketing to HR and administrative functions. Essentially, the design of nature shows us that there may be a better way to design and organize our operations. If we could only be as efficient as nature!
"...Paul Woolford, design director and senior vice president for HOK's Atlanta office, recently told us that the workshop in Vermont was very helpful in better understanding Interface's mission and practices. HOK seeks to work with partners who have a commitment to sustainability.
"...The commitment Ray Anderson and Interface have toward sustainability makes you a natural partner for us as we seek to work with companies who are actually 'walking the talk' when it comes to sustainable practices," Woolford added.
"It suddenly becomes a powerful story with more impact when we can point to other companies who are leading the charge in sustainability. By working together, we can create communities that are better places in which to live."
